Marian O’Sullivan and I had the pleasure of reading Pete the Puffling’s Brave Adventure to 144 children in Douglas and Bishopstown libraries and Douglas Rochestown ETNS 🥰 Some of the children expressed that their Grandpa or Grandma has had pulmonary fibrosis, and are on oxygen. The children were very attentive and inquisitive. There were lots of questions including the inspiration for the book, questions about the illustrations (by hand or on computer) and how long it took to write and illustrate. There were questions about a sequel which led onto a discussion about lung transplant and organ donation. Children knew what lungs are, and how important it is to keep them healthy.
Some children thought that Enniskillen is in England 🤣 but knew where Donegal and Cavan are so figured out Fermanagh’s location in no time 😉. The hardest question of all was Man United or Liverpool… 😬😂 and of course they were very inquisitive about Clare’s age 🤦🏼♀🤣 They were in awe that the book is being translated into 15 different languages and were especially happy to hear that we have a draft in Irish!!! ☘
We also revisited the lovely ladies in the ICA – Irish Countrywomen’s Association where I received €700 donation for PFNI and handed over a certificate of appreciation for this, as well as for hosting our Cork Book Launch in February. All this was made possible by the amazing talent that is Janet Bamford and Kevin McHugh who brought this book to fruition. Kevin’s murals in Enniskillen will no doubt be a highlight for any Cork children who may visit, as they were extremely impressed by the artwork in the book! And finally a word of thanks for the exceptional Marian O’Sullivan. Marian and I crossed paths on our PF journey as we were both members of the Carers Group, and sadly, now, we are on a shared grief journey, supported by The Pete and Tilly Club. Marian, you have been my counsellor, my confidant and most importantly, my friend. I will treasure my time spent with you.
My trip to Cork has strengthened my resolve and to continue to spread awareness about Pulmonary Fibrosis, especially through the book, with children, and to encourage kindness and compassion for anyone facing any illness. After all, these are our future storytellers, artists and clinicians! 🥰 please purchase a book if you have not already done so and keep our message of hope, support, love and community going 💝
