Ambassador Induction & Training Event – Empowered to Act. Trusted to Lead.

Saturday 24 January 2026 | Whitehouse Primary School, Newtownabbey

On Saturday afternoon, 24th January 2026, Pulmonary Fibrosis NI welcomed our ambassadors and trustees to a very special Ambassador Induction & Training Event, a gathering built around connection, learning and a shared commitment to shaping a better future for everyone affected by pulmonary fibrosis.

Guided by the theme “Together, our voices and actions shape our future. Empowered to act. Trusted to lead.” the session was designed to equip our ambassadors with the knowledge, confidence and practical tools to raise awareness, fundraise safely, represent the charity publicly, and feel genuinely supported as valued members of the PFNI community.

A strong foundation: purpose, knowledge and shared understanding

The afternoon opened with a warm welcome, introductions and a reminder of why this work matters so deeply. We reflected on the charity’s mission, the impact being made across Northern Ireland, and our hopes for the future — grounding the training in both purpose and people.

This was followed by an accessible and informative session on understanding pulmonary fibrosis, covering the essentials of the condition, the patient journey, and why awareness and advocacy are so vital. These discussions set the tone for the day: open, respectful and rooted in real-life experience.

Defining the ambassador role

A key focus of the event was helping ambassadors feel clear, confident and protected in their roles. Sessions explored:

  • Ambassador responsibilities and boundaries

  • Governance and policy essentials

  • Safeguarding and front-line service awareness

These conversations reinforced that being an ambassador is not about “doing everything,” but about being supported to do the right things well, ethically, safely and in line with best practice and in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

Fundraising, awareness and engagement

The focus then shifted into the practical heart of ambassador activity: fundraising, awareness events and community engagement. Trustees and ambassadors shared guidance on the Fundraising Code of Practice, how PFNI supports events, and how ambassadors can help grow both visibility and trust across communities.

There was also a valuable return to “back to basics”, centring patients and carers, listening carefully, and ensuring that every conversation reflects empathy, dignity and hope.

Finding your voice: communication, advocacy and confidence

We also focused on communications, media awareness, speaking with confidence, and becoming effective advocates and recruiters. Ambassadors were encouraged to recognise the power of their own stories and voices, and how these can inspire understanding, action and support.

We also highlighted opportunities for ongoing training, development and external supports, alongside the importance of staying connected as an ambassador network.

Honest conversation and shared reflection

The event closed with an open discussion a space for questions, reflections and shared ideas. This final session captured the spirit of the day: thoughtful, supportive, and full of collective determination.

Looking ahead

Saturday’s training was not an endpoint, but a beginning. It marked the strengthening of a growing ambassador community where people who are empowered, informed and trusted to represent Pulmonary Fibrosis NI, raise awareness, and help drive our mission forward.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who attended, contributed, and shared their time and experience. Together, we are building something meaningful, and together, our voices and actions truly do shape our future.

A digital Ambassador Handbook has been emailed to all Ambassadors along with all policies and a fundraising and awareness raising box and corporate clothing has also been provided for each Ambassador.

The day ended with a special acknowledgement of our hardworking Trustee Ian, who is celebrating a ‘special birthday’. Happy Birthday Ian!
